From Placeography

Hello

Not sure if this is the right place to ask questions, but... is there a way to look at new items posted or recently added, so each time you sign on you could see what's been added since your last visit?

Are there plans for user profiles? Some of the user names don't provide any clues to identity, interests, etc.

I'd like to know who is posting here and what their interests or backgrounds are...for example, I see a post by jmetzler...he's an architect who has worked on historic houses and has a website devoted to the renovation of his house and others.

Hi Mdougla,
You can find out the latest changes to the site by clicking on the Recent Changes link in the right menu. You see the last uploaded images here.

Currently there is no form for users to enter information about themselves. Users can go ahead and enter info on themselves free form but I think users might benefit from a form. If you have any ideas for fields I would be interested in your input. So far we have been very busy and have not had time to focus on a user form as of yet.

Thanks for your response, Admin...that's a bit anonymous (who are you?) I think visitors to the site would like to more about the site and who you (the group) are/is...an about section could be added.

This gives some background on Placeography, but I'd like to learn more... http://kstp.com/article/stories/S335107.shtml?cat=10000

I think user profiles provide important information about who is contibuting, their background and interests. This helps all Wiki readers and contributors to identify experts and create a community.

Recent contributors, I see are Notorious Nola, jmetzler, Househist, and Ddrake...it would be good to have profiles available of each and encourage the use of real user names or have these in the profile.

For example I recognize jmetzler as an architect for SALA architects. He's worked on many historic buildings including his home:

Here's some info about Joe:

http://www.salaarc.com/frameset.html?logo.html&metzlerscroll.html&metzler_resume.html

http://www.convenientoldhouse.com/closerlook/mackenzie/overview.html

It's useful to have this information about Placeography contributors, isn't it?

So a user profile...could possibly include Real name Profession Location...city or neighborhood Association memberships...professional or neighborhood association Vita sort of stuff such as awards won, articles or books published... Brief personal statement of one's interest in historic buildings in general or specific to their contributions... Activities involved in...house tours...preservation actions, etc. Other categories could be added and people could fill in what they'd like to share.

I'm still learning how to navigate and use this site, but did figure out that Special Pages...was a Site Map and found the list of user names. It's difficult to identify many of them, another good reason for real names and user profiles.

Hi Madeline,
I have developed the start of a user template, very basic. Currently you have to copy and paste code on to your user page. Ultimately I will have it so it preloads on to all "User" pages when I get the chance. Once on the page the "edit profile" link should appear in the profile box.

You can check out my user page as an example.

{{Boilerplate_User
|firstname=
|lastname=
|neighborhood=
|city-locality=
|state-province=
|country=
|website=
|email=
|occupation=
|interests=
|bio=
}}

I think this is great...user profiles are a good way to create community and share information! I also enjoyed reading about your house!

Hi Madeline,
You now have a User Profile template on your User page, give it a try!
