One Family’s Lake Street Story

“In that time, although my Dad was a good cook and could cook Greek food quite well, ethnic food was not “in” so the restaurant served standard American fare.” Deane Manolis

The Manolis family represents the epitome of the mid-century Lake Street immigrant experience: the family was a melting pot of immigrant cultures and part of the thriving Lake Street small-business community. Christos Manolis immigrated to the United States in 1907 at age 13. In 1920, Christos met his future wife Gert, the child of Swedish and German immigrants, while the two worked at Lakeview Candies on Hennepin and Lake. After marrying, they opened a successful family restaurant on the corner of Lake and 27th and raised their two children, Deane and Diane, in the neighborhood.

The Minnehaha Grill 1927-1962

For 35 years, the Minnehaha Grill stood on Lake just off 27th. Deane Manolis remembers that the grill served “a big lunch crowd, people from the neighborhood who worked there, a lot of people from Minneapolis Moline, they had a half hour lunch break and they would run over and have a quick meal at the lunch counter.” Manolis family life revolved around the restaurant, which was often open 7 days a week from 11 am to midnight. Deane remembers when he first began working there: “I started working there when I was about 11. My first job was to stand behind the little glass washer and to wash them and dry them and so forth.”
