"The original owners and residents of this house were Daniel W. and Elizabeth (O'Leary) Lawler. The house was built for an estimated $12,000. Daniel W. Lawler was born in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin in 1859 and cam to ST. Paul in 1884 after studying law at Yale University. He married Elizabeth O'Leary, daughter of a prominent St. Paul judge, in 1886. Lawler served as assistant U.S. District Attorney from 1886-88, became a Democratic candidate for Minnesota governor in 1892, served as chief counsel of the legal department for the Chicago and Great Western Railway from 1893-1901, and taught criminal law and procedure at the St. Paul College of Law. He served as mayor of St. Paul from 1908-1910" (Historic Sites Survey)
