Politician Andrew Volstead, born in 1860, lived in this house from 1894-1902. From 1903 to 1923 Volstead served in the United States Congress. He is best known as author of the National Prohibition Act of 1919, commonly referred to as the Volstead Act. The house became a National Landmark as the result of his authorship of the Capper Volstead Act which allowed the formation of cooperatives.
