William Ames, Jr. was born in 1846 in New Jersey, fought in the Dakota War of 1862, and worked in the livestock business in Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas. When his father died in 1873, Ames returned to St. Paul and began managing the Ames farms. He married Helen Fitzgerald, daughter of Canadian immigrants, in 1874 and the couple built this house on Ames land in the 1880s. Ames created and promoted the Hazel Park community, a small Victorian neighborhood centered around Ames School which comprises most of the pre-World War I development in the area. They had no children. William L. Ames, Jr. died in 1910, and in 1912 Helen Ames was still living in this house.
