William Wallis Erwin, "The Tall Pine," was a celebrated criminal defense lawyer and a hero of the labor movement. The St. Paul Trades and Labor Assembly sent Erwin to Pittsburgh in 1892, where he successfully defended leaders of the great strike against Andrew Carniegie's Homestead Steel Works who were charged with murder. Erwin went to Chicago in July 1894 to represent Eugene Debs and other leaders of the Pullman strike. He was a frequent speaker at labor events.
