Completed in 1966 next to the original Seward School (1887-1966), Seward Elementary was built as part of a new school-park-services complex. Matthews Center (1969) and Pillsbury-Waite Neighborhood Services combined efforts to serve the community, and the adjacent Matthews Park (1961) was a new amenity for the neighborhood and school children. It is noteworthy that this was the first time in the country that a school, park and neighborhood service center collaborated in this way.

School Program History

In 1977 an integrative program for the hearing impaired was added to the Seward Elementary site. Seward Elementary later became a Continuous Progress School (1982), and then was transformed into Seward Montessori K-8.
