This building was built in 1891 to serve as a meat market and apartment unit for Otto Roland, a German-born man who came to St. Paul in 1867. He founded his meat market in 1881, and operated the market and a grocery store at this location from 1891 until the mid 1950s. Roland, a revered and civic minded person, was a leader in his profession, served as a City alderman from 1902 through 1911, and was a Mason and a member of the Junior Pioneer Association. He worked toward the restoration of historic landmark "Fountain Cave" and was vitally interested in the preservation and rejuvenation of Fort Road (W. 7th Street). Roland died in 1956.
