Although a relatively small Queen Anne for the City of Stillwater, the Martin W. Hanks House has lovely architectural features, including a wrap around front porch, upper porch with intact period trim and circular window element, and turret. The garden in the front yard was featured in the book Minnesota Gardens, and some of the plants have existed in the garden for over a century. The interior of the home features hardwood floors and several rooms have inlaid borders in various woods. A built-in-buffet, three pocket doors, open staircase, circular window, eyebrow window, canted window, period-appropriate light fixtures, and original door hardware are just a few highlights of this home. The canted stained glass window was featured in the Windows of Stillwater print.
Martin Hanks was the Secretary of the Stillwater Lumber Company, the son of steamboat captain Stephen Hanks, and the grandson of Thomas Hanks. Thomas Hanks was the brother of Nancy Hanks, who was the mother of Abraham Lincoln.
The original building permit, number 570, is dated May 28, 1896.Contents |
