Dr. Justus Ohage performed America's first successful gall bladder surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1886.

Dr. Ohage was St. Paul's commissioner of public health from 1899 to 1907. He also mortgaged the house to purchase an island on the Mississippi River where he had public baths erected, out of concern for public hygiene. He donated the island and the baths to the city suggesting that it be named Harriet Island in honor of St. Paul's first educator, Harriet Bishop.

After the Ohage family left the home in 1947 the building was divided into rental units. A great-nephew of the Ohages, was chosen by the HRA to restore the house. They reconstructed the tower and porches and restored the interior. [1]
