The house was constructed for Charles Noyes, a druggist who is listed in the city directories as selling "ginseng, seneca roots and beeswax." From 1882-1896 the owner and occupant of the house was Joseph McKey, who was the head of Joseph McKey and Co. The company opperated the Boston One Pride Clothing Store at the northeast corner of 3rd and Robert. The house is a vernacular combination of the Italianate and French Second Empire styles that was common in St. Paul in the 1870s and 1880s. Few intact examples of this type remain today.
